D&H Canal Field Trip Program
As part of your local history curriculum, a visit to the Neversink Valley Area Museum at the D&H Canal Park in Cuddebackville is an ideal trip!
A field trip to the D&H Canal is an educational, enjoyable outdoor and indoor experience for children and adults.
The D&H Canal Field Trip Includes:
- Hands-on canal activities in our full-size, land-based canal boat replica! For a real life canal boat experience, your students will steer the boat, work a bilge pump, tie the boat to a snubbing post and haul supplies on and off the boat.
- Introduction and D&H Canal video
- A one-hour guided walk along the canal which includes canal buildings such as a locktender's house, canal store and blacksmith's house (viewed from the outside) a section of towpath along a water-filled section of the canal, a canalboat basin, remains of a canal aqueduct built by John Roebling, and location of Lock 51.
- "Black Diamonds and the D&H Canal", a three room exhibition on the D&H Canal including a working canal lock model demonstration, wall size canal map, boat models, photographs, descriptive text and visual information on the history of the canal from 1825 to 1898.
- Canal-era games and a visit to the Museum Store during lunch
- A canal souvenir for each student to take home!
Cost per Program
The cost of the program is $4.50 per student, all teachers and chaperones free.
We provide information packets for teachers prior to their visit to help prepare students for their trip, and teachers receive a packet of follow-up ready-to-photocopy canal activities.
The D&H Canal Park and Visitor Center has an indoor/outdoor picnic area for students to each lunch, and rest room facilities. The Museum Store has high quality educational toys, books, crafts, gift items and more.
